Property Damage – The insurance company is responsible for paying the reasonable cost to repair the other drivers vehicle or property if you are at fault. How to Detail Your Car at a Show Like a Pro in Minutes

Throughout the course of our business, we have the opportunity to attend many car shows to demonstrate and market our products. The shows that we go to might be a casual cruise-in, a local or a national meet. Regardless of the type of show - there is always one thing that stands out – a nicely detailed car!

Your ride might be a “driver”, a concourse-quality “trailer-queen” or even a racecar. No matter what you drive, there is no doubt that a detailed car that “pops” grabs your attention. And who doesn’t like to drive a nicely detailed car? And if you are a gear-head like me, yes I have a great job!

Some of these shows are meant to be just “fun”, while others are highly competitive. For example at the Mid America Truck show they have a show and shine. All of these “Big Rigs” are working trucks. The judges actually use white gloves! These guys even wax the inside of the frame rails – and detail the tires inside the tread. I couldn’t fathom such detail until I attended the event last year with our Canadian distributor Stephane Gauthier who is well known in the Big Rig Show and Shine circuit. They start detailing their rigs the week before the show.

Assuming that you don’t have a week to dedicate to detailing and staging a car at a show and the judges aren’t using white gloves, I will attempt to share with you tips and techniques for prepping your ride on site at the show. Now, your car might never see water and be towed to the event in an enclosed trailer, or it might be a cruiser and you drive it – the process is about the same - and can look equally nice – it’s all in the details!

Let’s assume that we are starting with a fairly clean surface - there is no sense in putting wax and dressings on dirty, soiled or otherwise contaminated surfaces.

Start with the exterior. Think of detailing your vehicle like painting a room – always start from the top down. The reason for that is if there is any overspray from wax or dressings, you can catch them as you work your way down the surfaces of the vehicle.

If you have a convertible or vinyl top, it’s time to dress it! Let’s talk a little about dressings here. For the most part, there are basically two kinds of dressings for vinyl, rubber and plastic – they all are either water based or solvent based. You will want to use solvent based dressings for the exterior of your ride – solvent based dressings won’t wash right off and fall apart like water-based dressings will, and in my opinion give a richer, deeper luster. As well, a solvent based dressing, like our Super Blue will do a better job for conditioning and UV protection.

I always suggest dedicating an applicator to your solvent-based dressing. The reason for this is that you want to do this as efficiently as possible and minimize any clean up of overspray. Start with spraying small amount of dressing on the applicator and wipe the entire top from front to back. Now – this is where some people stop and they get streaky-looking results. To eliminate this – repeat the process going from side to side, front to back. This crisscross technique ensures even coverage and eliminates any chance of getting those dreaded streaks when it dries.

If you don’t have a convertible or vinyl top, start with a quick detailer / spray wax and a clean microfiber towel on the roof surface.

Before you begin, let’s talk a little bit about your quick detailer /spray wax and microfiber towel. To get optimum results, you will want to use a quick detailer / spray wax that will not streak. Some will, given the humidity and temperature when they are applied – the bottom line is you want to enhance the appearance of your ride – not add smears or streaks. Also look for a quick detailer / spray wax that contains a small amount of carnauba – as an added benefit you will also be extending the protection of any existing wax you have on your ride. We also recommend using a clean microfiber towel dedicated to this purpose.

When using your quick detailer / spray wax – a little goes a long way. Just spritz the product lightly. Other than adding more protection and “pop” to your surface, it will also serve as a lubricant helping to safely float off dust and grime. Our natural tendency is if this much is good, more is better, right? Just like me with laundry detergent – wrong! All you end up doing is wasting product and making a mess.

The reason that we recommend a microfiber is that if used correctly, it will not scratch the surface of your ride. Don’t treat the microfiber towel like sandpaper – wipe gently, turning the towel over frequently - let the towel do the work. You won’t be adding any more shine or luster my rubbing hard, and even a microfiber can scratch your paint if you rub hard enough. Just by turning the towel over frequently and wiping off any excess it will easily collect any dust, road grime or bug splatters. I usually concentrate on a concentrate on a 2-foot by 2-foot area at a time – the old cliché applies here – inch-by-inch life’s a cinch! Do your entire surface of the roof.

Next, let’s move down to the glass with your quick detailer / spray wax. Now, some of these products don’t work well on glass, but the good ones will, like our Body Shine Showroom Spray Wax. Spritz a little on the glass surfaces, then wipe with a microfiber towel. The microfiber will make it a snap to clean up any contaminants like bug splatter if you drove to the show, and they are highly absorbent to suck up any excess detail spray. Your quick detailer / spray wax will make your windows “pop”!

Now is the time to start with the front part of your ride. Start at the hood and continue to work your way down. After the hood is wiped off, I move to the front of the vehicle. Repeat the same process, paying particular attention to the nooks and crannies of the grill and other trim of the car, including the headlights and grill.

Staying with the front part of your ride, I then start on the front fenders. Repeat the same process. Don’t worry about any vinyl, rubber or plastic trim; I usually save that for last. Ensure that you hit the chrome with your quick detail / spray wax as well as any painted surfaces. At this point – take a step back, check it out and admire your work – things are starting to come together after only a few minutes!

Next, move to the back of the vehicle. Start on another big surface - the trunk lid. After the trunk is done – continue on to the rear of the vehicle, again doing all painted and chrome surfaces. Next, move on to the rear quarters. I usually then will do both doors and surfaces in between the front and back last.

Now is the time that you want to dress the rubber, plastic and vinyl trim on your ride. Again, I apply the product with an applicator instead of spraying it on – it saves clean up time. Don’t worry or fret if you get any of the dressing on the adjoining painted or chrome surface – just wipe it off with your microfiber towel!

After dressing the trim on the body of your ride, move to the wheel wells. Yes – the wheel wells. Use your dressing to spray under the wheel wells to get it to look like new. It will easily cover up any dust or dirt that you might have accumulated driving to the show or parking at the show and it will look like new! Next hit your tires. There is nothing better looking than fresh-dressed tires - remember - it is all about the details!

Again, I suggest dressing wiping the tires with an applicator for two reasons. First, you will minimize any clean up from overspray. Secondly, we all have personal preferences about shine and finish – wiping the product on will allow you to get the exact finish that you desire – the heavier that you apply it the shinier the surface.

As a last step, use your quick detailer / spray wax and microfiber towel on your rims/wheels. This last step allows you to wipe up any excess dressing off your wheels.

Take another break and step back and admire your work. Next – let’s look at the interior.

Start with cleaning the interior glass. If needed, use a streak free glass cleaner and a microfiber towel dedicated to cleaning glass. Remember to clean up any overspray on the dash and door panels. Using your microfiber towel, wipe any dust off the dashboard, rear deck lid and the rest of your interior trim.

After wiping the interior down, open the door and pay attention to the jambs. Using a quick detailer / spray wax, spritz the surfaces and collect any grime that might be present.

As a final touch, use an aerosol touch up dressing for hard to reach places, like our Dash Vent Magic to dress those hard to reach areas like the conduit that carries wiring for power windows and locks. It will make them look like new!

Open the hood and trunk and wipe down those compartments. Use your spray wax / quick detailer if needed. Pay attention to the seams where the hood and trunk meet the body – on both sides of the panels – remember - it’s all in the details!

Buy for a passenger car. In the tire label, "P" indicates passenger-car tire. Other variations are "LT" for light truck and "T" for temporary or spare tire.

Step 3:
Determine how wide your tires can be. Different cars can fit different sizes. The "185" in our example is the section width of the tire in millimeters. Shorter and narrower tires have lower numbers.

Step 4:
Understand the tire type. In this case it's a radial tire, as shown with the "R."

According to Transport Canada, 10,000 children under the age of 12 are injured in traffic accidents every year.

In a crash at just 30 mph, an unrestrained child would be thrown forward with a force 30 to 60 times their body weight. They would be thrown about inside the vehicle, injuring themselves and quite possibly seriously injuring (or even killing) other people inside the vehicle. They are also likely to be ejected from the car through one of the windows.

It is not safe to hold a child on your lap. In a crash, the child could be crushed between your body and part of the car's interior. Even if you are using a seat belt, the child would be torn from your arms - you would not be able to hold onto them, no matter how hard you try.

It is also dangerous to put a seat belt around yourself and a child (or around two children).Crash tests have demonstrated that it's impossible to hang on to a crash-test dummy baby no matter how tightly you're holding it — even if you're wearing a lap/shoulder belt.

Putting that kid in a car seat reduces the chances of injury or death by as much as 75 per cent — as long as that car seat is installed correctly.

Level setting, done by ear, is more art than science. It can be done using an oscilloscope but since few people have one of those laying around we'll cover doing it by ear. Basically you want to start with the first component in the chain (the head unit) and work your way to the last component (the amplifier).

Start by turning all of the input level adjustment knobs (gain controls) on your components fully counter-clockwise (to their minimum setting). Set the tone controls (bass, treble, loudness) on your head unit to no boost (bass and treble level = 0 and loudness is off). If you have more than one RCA pair you will want to set each gain adjustment separately. Make sure your fader and balance controls are set to the channel you want to adjust first. This can be an individual channel if you have individual gain adjustments or a pair of channels if you have one gain for two channels.

Next set all of your equalizers settings (if you have an equalizer) to the center (detent) position so they produce no boost or cut. What we want is as pure a signal as possible.

Put in some good quality source material, preferably a CD with strong output and a clean recording. Hard rock would be a bad choice here. Try something cleaner, maybe acoustic, that you're familiar with.

Turn the deck's volume up slowly until you begin to hear distortion. When you hear it, stop and back off slightly until you no longer hear it. If you don't hear distortion, even when the volume is all of the way up then you have a quality head unit. That's what we're looking for.

Now with your head unit at maximum undistorted volume move on to the next component. Adjust it's input gain until you begin to hear distortion. Back off slightly.

Continue this process until you have all of the components in the chain at their maximum undistorted level.

When you reach the amplifiers you may need to wear earplugs to adjust them to their maximum level. As before, turn up the gain until you hear audible distortion. This should be audible even with earplugs in. But honestly, if you
have to wear earplugs to listen the distortion level is probably not a factor :)

How to Make Your Own Drive-In Movie Theater

There is an article over on popularmechanics by Glenn Derene that describes the process of making drive-in movie theater set it up in your car.

The setup is surprisingly simple. We hooked up our portable theater inside a 2007 Toyota Sienna minivan. Our projector was a 1280 x 720-pixel Panasonic PT-AX100 ($2999) that was, frankly, a bit of overkill for this project — the DVD source material we used was far below the projector's hi-def capabilities — but we were intrigued by its 2000-lumen brightness. Providing video was a Sony DVP-FX810 portable DVD player ($200) with a composite video output, a 6-hour battery and an 8-in. swiveling screen, which paled in comparison to the suggested maximum 200-in. screen of the Panasonic projector. For power, we used a Husky 750-watt inverter ($80). (Our projector had a maximum power requirement of 290 watts, but we figured that it couldn't hurt to at least double that to deliver consistent power.) Finally, we hooked up a C. Crane Digital FM Transmitter ($70) to the audio output of our DVD player to broadcast the movie soundtrack to the radios of other nearby cars.
For the screen, any white wall will do. But if no suitable wall is available, a large white bedsheet or dropcloth allows you to create a screen at will.

In 2008, BMW 1-Series Convertible will be available in market. The tiny Bimmers will sell in two variant 128i and 135i models and will feature two main design elements making for a driver's car.

The 128i Convertible will be powered by BMW's 3.0-liter, 230 horsepower inline six-cylinder engine generating 200 lb-ft of torque. Both the coupe and convertible will be available in spring 2008.

Like its fixed-roof stablemate, the 128i Convertible will feature Valvetronic valvetrain management and aluminum/magnesium cylinder block construction-core elements of BMW's EfficientDynamics.

The 135i Convertible, on sale later in 2008, features BMW's twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter inline six-cylinder engine producing 300 horsepower and 300 lb-ft of torque from as low as 1,400 rpm.

All-new Mazda Atenza, scheduled for imminent market introduction, embodies Mazda's latest car-making philosophy: Zoom-Zoom Evolution. Along with enhanced environmental and safety performance, the new model has a more emphatic Mazda character in its design, dynamic performance, packaging and craftsmanship. It delivers the best high-speed long-distance touring experience, thanks to dynamic high-speed performance with class-leading aerodynamics, supported by leading-edge safety features and excellent driving characteristics.

Three body types are offered: 4-door sedan, 5-door hatchback (Sport), and station wagon (Sport Wagon). The new MZR2.5L gasoline engine-developed from the current MZR2.3L gasoline unit-yields more torque in the frequently-used range, more linear response and acceleration feel, as well as more economical operation. Exterior and interior design create a sporty character along with an emotion–pleasing, premium feel. At the Tokyo Motor Show, a bold new sportier version with large front and rear aero bumpers, sporty grille and side spoilers is displayed for the first time. Mazda Taiki

Mazda Taiki reflects one possible direction for a future generation of Mazda sports cars aimed at helping create a sustainable society. The fourth concept car in the Nagare design series, Mazda Taiki further evolves the "flow" theme to establish a breathtaking presence that clearly distinguishes it as the next in the series, and which visually expresses the atmosphere – called taiki in Japanese – that wraps the Earth in its protective mantle. The basic proportions begin with the stretched coupe form of a front-engine rear-wheel-drive layout, the short overhangs, and the liberating feel of an all-glass canopy. The challenge to create "a design that visually expresses the flow of air" was inspired by the image of a pair of Hagoromo – the flowing robes that enable a celestial maiden to fly in Japanese legend – floating down from the sky. Inspired by Japanese koinobori – the decorative "climbing carp streamers"– the notion of creating an Air-tube became the concept word for the interior design. In accordance, from the dashboard and seats down to the door trim, the interior space creates the dynamic sensation that the flow of the wind is being visually depicted. Centering around the performance rotary engine sports packaging that is synonymous with the Mazda name, technologies introduced for the Mazda Taiki include the next-generation RENESIS (rotary engine 16X), which sets new standards for environmental and driving performance, a front-engine rear-drive layout, a unique 2-seat configuration, and Mazda's rotary sports package, which conveys an image of lightness. The effect integrates the design theme perfectly to realize outstanding aerodynamic performance.

New Mazda Premacy Hydrogen RE Hybrid

Compared with the Mazda RX-8 Hydrogen RE, the new Premacy Hydrogen RE Hybrid yields 40% better output, resulting in enhanced acceleration performance and an extended hydrogen-fueled range of about 200km, or twice that of the RX-8 Hydrogen RE. Seating capacity is also increased to give accommodation for five adults along with greater luggage space. The hydrogen rotary engine is changed from a longitudinal to a transverse layout and its intake/exhaust resistance and combustion efficiency are improved to yield high output across a wide range of engine speeds. The hybrid system employed for the hydrogen rotary engine efficiently converts energy from hydrogen combustion into electricity that powers the electric motor. Thanks to progress in electric drive technology, the system realizes high energy-efficiency and a quick response allied with low fuel consumption. Acceleration kicks in the instant you hit the accelerator, creating a direct feeling of power.

Future Powertrain Technologies
Next Generation I-4 Direct Injection Gasoline Engine

With the next-generation 2.0L gasoline engine, we are aiming for a 15% to 20% increase in dynamic performance and a 20% increase in fuel economy (in-company comparison with the current 2.0L engine). Particular attention was paid to direct injection, combustion control, variable valve system technology and emission purification technology to reduce all energy losses and raise thermal efficiency. Further, Mazda is developing a new catalyst employing single nano technology*3 that simultaneously improves emissions-cleaning capability and reduces the volume of precious metal required in a 3-way catalytic converter.

Next Generation Clean Diesel Engine

In developing our next-generation 2.0L diesel engine, we aimed at emissions performance to meet global standards and fuel economy raised by as much as 10%. We are also pursuing the kind of performance that allows stress-free driving up to high engine speeds. To fulfil our aims, we are promoting direct piezo-injection technology enabling multi-stage injection, reduction of the weight and size of every reciprocating and rotating component as well as the aluminum cylinder block. A two-stage turbocharger is adopted to yield both high torque in the low rev range and an increased acceleration response. The most advanced catalyst technologies, such as a highly efficient catalyst to burn particulate matter, are also fitted.

Next Generation RENESIS (Rotary Engine 16X)

In developing the next-generation RENESIS, Mazda made a thoroughgoing revision of engine dimensions including the trochoid rotor housing, adopting a longer stroke and larger displacement of 1600cc (800cc x 2) aimed to raise thermal efficiency and boost torque at all engine speeds. By employing the Hydrogen RE design policy of a direct injection system and aluminum side housing, as well as various other measures, we are further promoting the rotary engine's merits of light weight and compact size.

SISS (Smart Idle Stop System)

Mazda's SISS restarts the engine without using an electric motor. The system injects fuel directly into the cylinders while the engine is stationary and ignites the fuel to create downward piston force that serves to start the engine, resulting in fuel savings of about 10% in Japan's 10-15 mode in addition to restarting the engine quickly and quietly.

Safety Technologies
Rear Vehicle Monitoring System (Installed in all-new Mazda Atenza)

Radar sensors in the left and right rear corners of the body detect a vehicle approaching from the rear or in the blind area behind the B-pillars. The system is active when traveling at 60 km/h or faster.

Multi-control system CF-Net (Cross Functional-Network) (Installed in all -new Mazda Atenza)

A centralized display above the instrument panel close to the driver's line of sight and steering wheel switches within easy reach of the driver allow easy, integrated operation of audio, climate control, touring computer and other systems.

Roll stability control system (Installed in Mazda CX-9 for North America)

The system maintains a stable vehicle attitude by ascertaining the absolute roll angle at any given moment through a combination of information on the vehicle's roll movements provided by the roll rate sensor, and data on steering angle, lateral G-force, yaw rate and vehicle speed from the DSC (Dynamic Stability Control) system.

Mazda is participating in an ITS*4 public road test to be held in Hiroshima under the auspices of an organization made up of government, business and academic institutions. The test is scheduled to begin in the fall this year. We are in charge of developing a navigation system that supports ITS in this test on public roads and we will collect and analyze data from systems installed in several dozen Mazda vehicles. We are also developing an infrastructure-cooperative driver support system that will allow the driver to receive relevant information from sensors, beacons and other devices installed on the road. The support system includes a right-turn collision prevention support system, a blind corner collision prevention support system, and a system to support the prevention of rear-end collisions when waiting at traffic signals. GM will show to the world its new hybrid-powered GMC Yukon and Chevrolet Tahoe full-size SUVs at the upcoming 2007 State Fair of Texas starting this Friday.

GM is reporting in its press release will provide the new 2WD GMC Yukon Hybrid SUV in Texas at the GM Arlington Assembly Plant.

Both Tahoe and Yukon are equipped with a 6.0-liter V8 engine with the GM Active Fuel Management system. When not needed all of its available power, the system will shut down half of the engine's cylinders and will shut down the gasoline engine altogether at speeds lower than 30 mph, significantly reducing fuel consumption.

To let the battery run longer, it is recharged with the help of a regenerative braking system.

From the moment work started on the formative concept sketches of the Phantom, it was crucial that the design team, led by Ian Cameron, had an instinctive feel for what makes a the unmistakable Rolls-Royce 'look'.

We can all appreciate the boldness and confidence of a Phantom II or the flowing grace of a Silver Cloud, but it takes a trained eye to assess those lines and see the science behind the shapes. To this end, Cameron and his team scrutinised the company's greatest creations in an effort to discover the essence of Rolls-Royce. Its design DNA, if you like.

The iconic grille and Spirit of Ecstasy mascot are obvious identifiers, but there are numerous more subtle elements that have an equally powerful effect. The coach doors and striking use of chrome. The gentle, upswept line of the sill - known internally as the 'waftability' line – that creates a powerful, poised stance and makes the car appear to be moving when stationary.

With closer inspection, other themes emerge. A long wheelbase is crucial to achieve the classic Rolls-Royce look, as is a long bonnet, but while the front should be bold and upright with a short overhang, the rear needs to be softer, with the roofline blending into a wide 'C' pillar (the rearmost of the car's vertical roof support posts), to give a flowing appearance. Large wheels add an essential sense of proportion: the Rolls-Royce Motor Cars rule of thumb being the diameter of the wheel and tyre is roughly half the height of the car.

'Our absolute priority, explains Cameron, was to create a motor car that is clearly a Rolls-Royce even when the radiator grille is not in view.'

Now that you're armed with the secrets of Rolls-Royce design, you can cast an educated eye over the Phantom, and appreciate how Cameron and his team have fused classic proportions with strikingly modernity to create the definitive 21st century Rolls-Royce.

The first phase of the programme - compliance with the Euro 5 legislation expected in 2009 - has already reached fruition, and an example of the new engine, which makes its first appearance in next year's Accord range, is being shown on the stand.

Honda continues to work on the second phase of development of its latest diesel engine and has already achieved compliance with the stringent US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Tier II/Bin 5 emissions requirements. This is of particular significance to the European market in that the Tier II standards are even more demanding than the Euro 6 requirements which remain at the proposal stage. An example of this engine is also on display at the stand.

In Euro 5 regulation, emissions of particulates from diesel-engined cars are expected to be reduced by 80 per cent compared to Euro 4 (down from 25 to 5 mg/km), while NOx levels are cut from 250 to 180 mg/km.
Tier II is the second stage of US emissions standards and is split into eight permanent and three temporary certification levels called ‘bins' to which vehicles are certified. When fully implemented in 2009, a manufacturer's light-vehicle fleet has to meet the average NOx standard of approximately 43.5 mg/km (0.07 g/mile) - the Bin 5 level (and equivalent to California's LEV II standard).

Nissan North America, Inc. today announced pricing on the all-new 2008 Nissan Rogue, which goes on sale September 18 at Nissan dealers nationwide. Rogue is Nissan’s first entry into the small crossover SUV segment. It is available in two well-equipped, high-value models, Rogue S and Rogue SL.

The starting Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Price (MSRP) for the well-equipped 2008 Rogue S is $19,250 for the 2WD model and $20,450 for Rogue S AWD. Pricing for Rogue SL is $20,670 for 2WD and $21,870 for AWD.

All 2008 Rogue models come equipped with a standard 170-horsepower (167 hp CAL emissions) 2.5-liter 4-cylinder engine, advanced Xtronic CVTÔ (Continuously Variable Transmission), Vehicle Dynamic Control (VDC), 4-wheel disc brakes with Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) and a long list of standard safety equipment, including six air bags. Nissan concept car 'Mixim'

Nissan presented Mixim, all-electric concept car during 2007 Frankfurt Motor Show. It’s features 1+2 seating arrangement with a central driving position and swiveling captain's chair and adopts an LCD command center displaying a virtual representation of the front wheels that actually turn in real time with steering inputs.

The car is equipped by the Super Motor, which is fed by a pack of high-output lithium ion batteries. What Nissan calls The Super Motor is unique compared to other electric motors in that it has two drive shafts and is able to power the left and right wheels independently.
